How to Explain HTMA to Clients -Without Overwhelming Them

Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) is an incredibly powerful tool — but let’s be honest, it can feel like a lot for clients. Between the periodic table, ratios, and acronyms, most clients are lost before you even get to the action plan.

The good news? You don’t have to choose between sounding smart and keeping things simple.

In this post, I’ll show you how to explain HTMA in a clear, client-friendly way — so your clients stay engaged, understand what’s happening in their body, and feel empowered to follow your recommendations.

Health coach explaining HTMA results using a notebook and laptop — blog post about how to explain hair tissue mineral analysis (HTMA) to clients without overwhelming clients.

Teach clients to understand their HTMA results with simple analogies, visuals, and done-for-you tools.

1. Start with the Big Picture

Before diving into minerals and charts, give your client a clear, 1-sentence overview:

“HTMA is a simple hair test that gives us insight into how your body is responding to stress and how well it's using minerals — which are the spark plugs of your cells.”

Why this works: It frames HTMA as a functional tool, not a diagnostic one, and focuses on outcomes your client actually cares about (energy, stress, resilience, metabolism).

2. Keep It Relatable — Use Everyday Language

Instead of: "You're a Slow Oxidizer with a high Ca:K ratio"

Try: “Right now, your mineral pattern shows your metabolism is running in low gear — kind of like a car stuck in second gear. This can make you feel tired, sluggish, or foggy.”

Pro tip: Analogies are your friend. Use examples like:

  • Minerals = spark plugs

  • Sodium = your energy dial

  • Calcium = cement or armor

These comparisons stick — and help your client connect the dots faster.

3. Focus on the Why Behind the Plan

Clients don’t need to memorize the mineral wheel — they want to know what their results mean for them and what to do next.

Try using this format:

  1. Here’s what we’re seeing

  2. What this might explain

  3. What we’re going to do to support you

Example: “We’re seeing signs of low sodium and potassium, which can affect your energy and stress resilience. This might explain why you're feeling depleted after busy days or need more caffeine than usual. We'll support this with specific minerals, more salt in your meals, and a daily mineral drink to help replenish your stores.”

4. Give Them a Visual (Seriously)

Even a beautiful 1-pager can change everything. Clients love having something they can see and refer back to. A clean report, a visual chart, or a 1-slide summary can be the difference between “got it!” and glazed eyes.

This is why I created the HTMA Client Report Template — a customizable Canva document that lets you turn technical data into beautifully laid out, client-ready summaries.

5. Repeat and Reinforce

Clients often need to hear things more than once — in different formats — to fully integrate the info.

Repeat key concepts in follow-up sessions, use checklists or mini-handouts, and check in on how they’re feeling before focusing only on compliance.
